How to Sketch a Mouth – A Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction
Sketching a good credible mouth is another feature that can really show off your drawing as a skillful portrait artist. The magic like all my blogs in sketching portraits can be done with simple shapes whether it’s for quick character design, refinement of a portrait or expressive illustrations understanding the basic shape is fundamental.
And proportions and shading will look smooth because of it. The technique is basically used by all artist no matter what level you’re at and will, as I have said in previous blogs, practice, practice, and practice makes perfect, because the first go around is not going to be your best, it’s not and you’ll find out I’m right soon enough with practice.
Basic Shapes and Construction of the Mouth
We will make a frontal mouth in the example below using step-by-step creation using simple everyday shapes (least in the beginning). The examples below are using a computer connected to a pen display but the principles/concept is the same digitally or traditional.
As was mentioned in my Andrew Loomis blog, the mouth sits about 1/3rd (the Rule of Thirds) of the way down of the nose and chin. And the width of the mouth roughly lines up with the center of the eyes (or Irises).
